Ask elementary school teacher Kathy Davies a favorite part about her job, and she’ll tell you with a smile.

“My favorite part of teaching is being with the children,” Davies said. “I work with the most amazing children, courageous children, bright children, and I’m very lucky to have a job that I love.”

That love goes both ways, as Davies was nominated by the community and just awarded the Teacher of the Year Award in the Emerson Public School District.

“I always wanted to be a teacher since I was very young. I always worked with children from a very young age in summer camps and babysitting,” the special education teacher said.

Davies grew up in Jersey City, NJ, and went to a Catholic high school in Bayonne, NJ. Davies furthered her education at Rutgers University and Jersey City State college where she majored in special education. She began her teaching career in 1985 in Jersey City, then moved to Rochelle Park, NJ. Davies later became a teaching aide in Emerson at the Patrick M. Villano Elementary School. She currently teaches language arts and math to third, fourth, fifth and sixth graders. She’s taught science and social studies, too.

“Mrs. Davies has always been a good teacher for me. She helped me with almost every subject, and I like coming here and visiting her, but I’m going to miss her when I go to the high school, but I’m going to try and visit her,” one of Davies’ students said.

Davies said she was shocked when she won Teacher of the Year. She shared credit with other staff in the building, but is proud of her efforts in the classroom.

“It is a very rewarding job. It’s hard work, but it’s worth every minute,” Davies said.
