Five days a week, thousands of children walk into school buildings across the nation every morning, preparing themselves for a day full of learning. What they do not expect to face is their safety becoming suddenly compromised, all by the sounds of gunshots.

Everytown, described as “an independent, non-partisan organization dedicated to understanding and reducing gun violence in America,” reports that there have been 290 gun related incidents since 2013 in this country.

It is time for things to change.

In 2018 alone, there have been 18 gun related incidents. In breaking down the information, various sources have concluded the following. 7 of those incidents occurred during school hours, 2 occurred outside of school hours, 2 involved shots fired for an unknown reason, and 3 involved shots fired unintentionally. The other incidents involved one suicide attempt and 2 stray bullets hitting schools.

Just last week, Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, faced a mass shooting where 17 students were killed.

It is time for things to change.

A school is meant to be a safe environment, where students are able to learn. They should not have to sit down at a desk left to wonder how truly safe they are. While safety drills become a part of standard practice, and equipment to prevent break-ins are installed, students across the nation sit in fear.

It is time for things to change.

While guns should not be completely banned, they certainly need to be regulated. Common sense gun laws, including stronger background checks, stronger mental health examinations, heavier restrictions on gun licensing and better processes for registration, need to be put into action now. Congress needs to step up and take action. The fact that nothing is being done, after so many have been victimized, is unacceptable.

It is time for things to change.

Action needs to be taken now.

The current status quo is not acceptable.

Things need to change; there is no possible way to deny it. By instilling common sense laws and limiting access to guns, pathways to a safer environment for schools, and for the country in general, will occur.
